JLPT N4:

toward / whereas

Marks the person or thing an attitude or action is aimed at ("toward", "to"), or sets up a contrast ("whereas").

How to form it

  • Put に対(たい)して after the target: 先生(せんせい)に対(たい)して失礼(しつれい)だ (rude to the teacher).
  • Before a noun, use
  • After a clause + の, it contrasts two things: 兄(あに)が静(しず)かなのに対(たい)して、弟(おとうと)はよく話(はな)す (my older brother is quiet, whereas my younger brother talks a lot).

Examples

I said something rude to her.

My older brother is quiet, whereas my younger brother talks a lot.

Common mistakes

  • Using it for the topic of talk.
