〜続(つづ)ける

keep doing

Says an action goes on without stopping: "keep doing", "continue to…".

How to form it

  • Start from the ます form and replace ます with 続(つづ)ける: 走(はし)ります becomes 走(はし)り続(つづ)ける.
  • 続(つづ)ける is an ichidan verb: 走(はし)り続(つづ)けた.

Examples

彼(かれ)は最後(さいご)まで走(はし)り続(つづ)けた。

He kept running to the end.

雨(あめ)が一日中(いちにちじゅう)降(ふ)り続(つづ)けました。

It rained all day long.

Notes

  • 〜ている describes what is happening at one moment; 〜続(つづ)ける stresses that it went on and on.

Common mistakes

  • Using the dictionary form. Say 走(はし)り続(つづ)ける, not 走(はし)る続(つづ)ける.
