疑問詞+も + negative
JLPT N5:nothing / no one / nowhere
A question word + も with a negative verb means "no-": 何も〜ない (nothing), 誰も〜ない (no one), どこにも〜ない (nowhere).
How to form it
- Add も to the question word and make the verb negative: 何も食べなかった (I didn't eat anything).
- が and を disappear before も: 誰も来なかった (nobody came).
- Other particles go between the question word and も: どこにも行かない (I'm not going anywhere), 誰にも言わない (I won't tell anyone).
Examples
今朝は何も食べませんでした。
I didn't eat anything this morning.
教室には誰もいません。
There's nobody in the classroom.
週末はどこにも行きませんでした。
I didn't go anywhere at the weekend.
Notes
- With a positive verb, some of these words mean "every-" or "always": いつも (always), どこも (everywhere).
Common mistakes
- Using a positive verb for "no one". Say 誰も来ませんでした, not 誰も来ました.
- Keeping を before も. Say 何も食べない, not 何もを.
