〜時(とき)

JLPT N5:

when

Says when something happens: "when X, Y" or "at the time of X".

How to form it

  • Put a plain verb or い-adjective before 時(とき): 行(い)く時(とき), 寒(さむ)い時(とき).
  • Nouns take の and な-adjectives take な: 子供(こども)の時(とき) (when I was a child), 暇(ひま)な時(とき) (when I'm free).
  • The verb's tense shows the order. With the dictionary form, the main action happens before the 時(とき) action is complete: 日本(にほん)に行(い)く時(とき)、お土産(みやげ)を買(か)った (I bought souvenirs before leaving for Japan).
  • With the past, it happens after: 日本(にほん)に行(い)った時(とき)、お土産(みやげ)を買(か)った (I bought souvenirs when I was in Japan).

Examples

子供(こども)の時(とき)、ピアノを習(なら)いました。

I learned the piano when I was a child.

暇(ひま)な時(とき)、何(なに)をしますか。

What do you do when you're free?

Notes

  • 時(とき) is often written in hiragana: とき.

Common mistakes

  • Using the polite form before 時(とき). Say 行(い)く時(とき), not 行(い)きます時(とき).
