A formal "when" or "on the occasion of", common in business, notices and announcements.

How to form it

  • Verbs use the dictionary or た-form: 利用(りよう)する際(さい)に (when using), 帰(かえ)る際(さい)に.
  • Nouns take の: お帰(かえ)りの際(さい)に (when you leave).
  • 際(さい)は and 際(さい) alone are also common: 緊急(きんきゅう)の際(さい)は (in an emergency).

Examples

お帰(かえ)りの際(さい)に、ご連絡(れんらく)ください。

Please let us know when you leave.

緊急(きんきゅう)の際(さい)は、この番号(ばんごう)に電話(でんわ)してください。

In an emergency, please call this number.
