〜ため

JLPT N3:

because of / due to

Gives a cause in formal speech and writing: "because of", "due to". It is ために without に, and just as formal.

How to form it

  • Nouns take の: 雪(ゆき)のため (due to snow).
  • Verbs and い-adjectives use the plain form, and な-adjectives take な: 熱(ねつ)があるため, 危険(きけん)なため.

Examples

雪(ゆき)のため、電車(でんしゃ)が遅(おく)れた。

The train was delayed because of snow.

熱(ねつ)があるため、本日(ほんじつ)は休(やす)みます。

I have a fever, so I'll be off today.

Notes

  • It is typical of announcements and notices: 事故(じこ)のため、電車(でんしゃ)が遅(おく)れております.
  • After a deliberate action, the same ため means "in order to". See 〜ために (purpose).
