〜ために

JLPT N4:

in order to

States the purpose of an action: "in order to…" or "for…". The purpose is something the subject deliberately works toward.

How to form it

  • Put the verb in the dictionary form and add ために. It must be an action the subject chooses to do.
  • After a noun, add の: 健康(けんこう)のために (for my health).
  • Both halves of the sentence have the same subject.

Examples

日本語(にほんご)を勉強(べんきょう)するために、日本(にほん)に来(き)ました。

家族(かぞく)のために働(はたら)いています。

I work for my family.

Notes

  • When the goal is not an action you control — a potential verb, a negative, or a change like なる — use 〜ように: 聞(き)こえるように大(おお)きな声(こえ)で話(はな)す (speak loudly so you can be heard).

Similar meaning

  • 〜ようにso that

"So that" — for goals outside your direct control.

  • 〜のにfor (doing)

What something is used for or what it takes: 料理(りょうり)するのに使(つか)う (used for cooking).
