〜ように

JLPT N4:

so that

Gives a goal that is not directly in your control: "so that…".

How to form it

  • Put the verb in the dictionary form or the ない form and add ように: 忘(わす)れないように (so that I don't forget).
  • It suits potential verbs, negatives, and verbs for things that happen by themselves, like 聞(き)こえる (be audible) and 治(なお)る (get better).
  • The two halves can have different subjects: 子供(こども)にも分(わ)かるように、簡単(かんたん)に説明(せつめい)した (I explained it simply so that even children could understand).

Examples

忘(わす)れないように、メモを取(と)りました。

I made a note so that I wouldn't forget.

後(うし)ろの人(ひと)にも聞(き)こえるように、大(おお)きな声(こえ)で話(はな)してください。

Please speak up so the people at the back can hear.

Notes

  • For a deliberate action that the subject carries out, use 〜ために.
