に
JLPT N5:result of change
Marks what something becomes or is made into, with なる (become) and する (make, decide on).
How to form it
- Put に after a noun or な-adjective, then なる: 医者になる (become a doctor), 静かになる (become quiet).
- With する it means make something into something, or choose it: 部屋をきれいにする (make the room clean), コーヒーにします (I'll have coffee).
- い-adjectives use their く form instead of に: 寒くなる (get cold). See the adverb form.
Examples
医者になりたいです。
I want to become a doctor.
部屋をきれいにしました。
I cleaned the room.
Notes
- 〜となる also exists, but it is formal and mostly written.
Common mistakes
- Using に after an い-adjective. Say 寒くなる, not 寒いになる.
