よ
JLPT N5:you know / I tell you
At the end of a sentence, よ presents information as new to the listener, or presses a point: "you know", "I'm telling you".
How to form it
- Add よ to the end of a sentence: これはおいしいですよ (this is good, you know).
- Use it for things you think the listener does not know yet, or to urge them on: 早く行こうよ (come on, let's go).
Examples
これはおいしいですよ。
This is really good, you know.
明日は休みですよ。
Tomorrow's a holiday, you know.
Notes
- Used too often, or with someone of higher status, よ can sound pushy.
Common mistakes
- Adding よ to something the listener already knows well.
Similar meaning
- ねright? / isn't it?
Checks that the listener agrees about something shared.
