ね
JLPT N5:right? / isn't it?
At the end of a sentence, ね looks for agreement or checks something both speakers know: "right?", "isn't it?".
How to form it
- Add ね to the end of a sentence: いい天気ですね (nice weather, isn't it?).
- Use it for things the listener also knows or can see, or to check you have understood: 明日の三時ですね (tomorrow at three, right?).
- It also makes a sentence sound softer and friendlier.
Examples
いい天気ですね。
Nice weather, isn't it?
この映画、面白いですね。
This movie is good, isn't it?
Notes
- よね combines the two: you state something and check the listener agrees: これ、おいしいよね?
Common mistakes
- Adding ね to something only you know, like your own name: 私は田中ですね sounds odd.
Similar meaning
